The TWA Hotel at JFK Airport includes the former TWA Flight Center terminal designed by Eero Saarinen (now occupied by event spaces, restaurants and bars) as well as two new buildings. PHA provided traffic and civil engineering services for this renovation and expansion project. The firm was responsible for traffic access coordination and site circulation planning, including civil design of new vehicular access to the hotel loading area and the adjacent JFK Yellow Garage, and a new covered walkway.
The vehicular and pedestrian access to the hotel required reconfiguring the Terminal 5 Arrivals/ Departures intersection with the JFK Access Road, including a new signal and pedestrian crosswalk. The roadway plans also included modifications to the JFK Yellow Garage access and internal circulation. PHA provided roadway design, utility coordination, signal design, grading and drainage design services for these improvements. The firm’s responsibilities also included preparation of maintenance and protection of traffic (MPT) plans, including traffic modeling to ensure that airport circulation would not be impacted during construction.
